Project: Plant Pixels

The beauty of nature and design

So I kind of fell in love with succulents, they’re resilient, low maintenance, have a wonderful pattern, and can go anywhere since they don’t need soil. I’ve used succulents before in art pieces like the one below:

A beautiful succulent sitting inside a bowl I created myself. The outside is like the ocean and the inside a bowl of sunshine flecked with bubbles of the sea.

However, after seeing what a whole succulent wall looks like I knew I wanted something similar.

This was huge in person several feet across.

But I also wanted something smaller and more modular, having a grid to fill up inherently shows negative space where there isn’t a plant, which is an eyesore. So I started to think what if I mounted each plant directly to the wall? And it led me to this design:

It has a flat bottom to apply a circular double-sided adhesive dot, so that you can try out different places where you want to put the plant. And then if you want to install it more permanently, you can screw the mount into the wall through the hole in the middle. There are three arms that come out to grip the succulent. And it should be printed out of a flexible polymer like TPU so that it has some give to accommodate a wider range of plants. You could also scale the model up and down a bit for more flexibility in the size department. Although if you’ve blown up the model and you’re planning on screwing it into the wall, you’ll need to fill in the hole with something like sugru.

The mount itself with its leaf shaped petals is designed to mimic and complement nature. While the modular and repositionable nature, let’s you create an art piece custom to you.
